Carbon is in Group 14 and has a valence electron configuration ns2np2. Carbon has 3 allotropes, graphite (the most stable form at 25oC and 1 atmosphere pressure), diamond, and the recently discovered fullerenes, of which C60 is the most common. C60 is named buckminsterfullerene after R. Buckminster Fuller the American architect who designed "geodesic" domes (The American pavilion at the Montreal Expo in 1967 was a geodesic dome.) Graphite and diamond are network solids which are insoluble in liquid solvents but C60 is molecular and soluble in benzene, for example.

Carbon forms so many compounds that it has its own branch of chemistry, organic chemistry. Carbon is in Group 14 and has a valence of 4.
