Calendar Desciption: An interdisciplinary course which provides an introduction to modern concepts of the structure of atoms and of condensed matter. Nuclear, atomic, and molecular bonding are discussed and applied to technologically important materials, including semi-conductors and macromolecules. For Fall 1999: Tutorial Hours and Location: Required Materials: Textbook: "University Physics", 9th Edition, Young and Freedman, Addison-Wesley (1998). This text will be used again next semester in the course IPS*1220 "Mechanics, Electricity, and Magnetism". Computer Account on CPES Microlab network: Some of the quizzes will involve exercies using the MAPLE algebraic software package. To do these, you will need an account on the CPES Microlab Network. To obtain this, go to the Microlab (MACN 306-8) and to the computer on the counter beside the laser printer. Follow the instructions given to request an account. This account will also be applicable for IPS*1110. Marking Scheme: The course grade will be calculated as follows:
