Dr. Kathryn E. Preuss, Associate Professor | ||
| Students in the Preuss Group develop strong synthetic laboratory skills for the preparation of organic, main-group inorganic and organometallic molecular compounds. Students gain expertise working under inert atmosphere. Each group member has his/her own double manifold Schlenk line. All students are trained to use the inert atmosphere dry-box. Students in the Preuss Group gain experience using a wide variety of instrumentation. Our group owns and operates an X-band EPR with variable temperature capabilities, a UV-Vis NIR spectrometer with variable temperature capabilities, and a mid-IR/NIR spectrometer with variable temperature capatilities. The departmental instrumentation is also heavily used, including the NMRs (e.g., for solution magnetometry or paramagnetic NMR) and electrochemical equipment (e.g., for cyclic voltammetry). We also have funding for a new DC-SQUID magnetometer that is scheduled to arrive in August 2010. High quality students and post-docs are the most important factor in a successful research group. I am very proud of the members of my group. Thanks, guys, and keep up the good work! |

| Christian Carello completed his honours Bachelor of Science majoring in chemistry at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario in Spring of 2009. He voyaged to Southern Ontario to do a Masters degree in chemistry under the supervision of Kathryn Preuss at U of G working on inorganic synthesis of radical ligands. After being born and raised in Northern Ontario he has trouble adjusting to the hot and humid weather but is still loving every minute of it. | ||||||

Dan MacDonald Ph.D. Candidate Lab: MacN 228 Office: MacN 232 Phone: (519) 824-4120 x58110
| Dan MacDonald completed his undergraduate B.Sc. (honours) at Mount Allison University in April of 2007, working on the inorganic synthesis of thallium(III) alkoxide polymers. Dan came to the University of Guelph in May of 2007 to begin his Master's degree under the supervision of Dr. Kathryn Preuss working with magnetic molecular materials chemistry. Despite the fact that Dan was raised by a pack of lions deep within the African wilderness, he has adjusted quickly to the fast paced world of humans. Of his integration into human society Dan was quoted as saying: "So far I've only devoured one colleague...and he had it coming."

Ian completed his B.Sc. (double major) in chemistry (honours) and biology at Lakehead University in April of 2007. After a long, painful yet exhilarating move from the frozen North, he joined the Preuss research group in September, 2007. He is now working toward a Ph.D. His project involves the development of radical anion ligands for spintronic materials.
